Storage Tanks

The Storage Tank Program works with owners and operators to prevent storage tanks from leaking hazardous substances into the environment. The program conducts inspections to ensure tanks meet tank construction, installation, maintenance, operation, monitoring, retrofitting, and upgrading requirements.

In general, each storage tank on the Navajo Nation is inspected every two years, unless circumstances warrant more frequent inspections. The storage tank owner or operator usually is informed in advance that an inspection will be taking place. A team of two NNEPA inspectors will visit the facility to ensure that all requirements are being met. In general, if a minor requirement is not being complied with and the facility has no prior history of violations, the inspectors will issue a Notice of Inspection which gives the owner or operator a specific deadline to comply before any enforcement action will be taken. The Storage Tank Program also implements a Field Citation and Delivery Prohibition (“Red Tag”) Program to address certain recurring violations and major violations of Storage Tank Program requirements. These programs are discussed in the Enforcement section.
