The Surface & Groundwater Protection Department includes five different programs, which are authorized by two separate statutes: the Navajo Nation Clean Water Act (NNCWA) and the Navajo Nation Safe Drinking Water Act (NNSDWA). The Public Water Systems Supervision Program (PWSSP) and Underground Injection Control (UIC) Program are authorized by the NNSDWA, the Water Quality/NNPDES program is authorized by the NNCWA, and the Aquifer Protection and Domestic Wastewater programs are authorized by both statutes and implemented as coordinated efforts between different program staff.
