Leaking Storage Tanks

The Storage Tank Program addresses storage tank sites where leaks have occurred, in order to ensure that the petroleum and its harmful constituents released at those sites are cleaned up by responsible parties in a way that protects human health and the environment according to Navajo standards. To achieve this goal, the program oversees environmental site assessments, approves corrective action plans, and oversees the actions conducted pursuant to those plans.

The Storage Tank Program also conducts site cleanups itself in certain situations, such as when a release creates a threat to human health or the environment and there is no responsible party who can conduct a necessary corrective action, or when Navajo funds are needed to assure effective cleanup. See NNSTA Section 1547(B).
